If you’ve landed here via searches like handmade Kindle sleeves UK, bookish travel accessories, protect Kindle in bag, handbound classic novels UK, printable typesets for bookbinders, or unique literary gifts UK, then hello. You’re in exactly the right place. (SEO? Never heard of her.)
This is a blog about a solo day out, but also, quite firmly, a blog about not waiting around for other people to be free.
I wanted to go somewhere. No one else was available. Instead of postponing it indefinitely (a national pastime), I booked the trains and went anyway. The three trains, by the way. Three!
I packed light: snacks, a vague plan, and my Kindle tucked safely inside one of my own handmade Kindle sleeves. Which, for the record, is exactly the kind of situation they’re made for. (*turns to camera*, hello #ad)
There’s something about travelling that turns bags into chaos. Keys, headphones, receipts you don’t remember acquiring. It’s a hostile environment for a screen.
Having a padded Kindle sleeve meant I could just drop my device into my bag without thinking about it. No scratches, no screen anxiety, no wrapping it in a scarf like it’s Victorian porcelain.
If you’ve ever searched for “protect Kindle in bag UK”, “Kindle sleeve for travel”, or “bookish accessories for commuting”, this is exactly where a soft, handmade Kindle sleeve proves its worth. Not for drops or dramatic acts of gravity, but perfect for the everyday chaos of trains, platforms, and overstuffed backpacks. (end ad read.)
I did, of course, go to the Jane Austen Centre, because it would have been strange not to.
There is something reassuring about standing fully in your personality while on a solo trip. You like books? Excellent. Here are several rooms dedicated to one of the most famous authors in English literature. No need to negotiate the itinerary with anyone else.
I also stopped by Mr B's Reading Emporium, which is exactly the sort of independent bookshop that makes you consider financial irresponsibility. The staff were SO knowledgeable about potentially every book ever written? There didn’t seem to be a genre they didn’t have a recommendation for. I could’ve stayed amongst those shelves forever.
If you’re someone who appreciates handbound books, artisan bookbinding, or unique editions of classic novels, it’s the kind of place that validates all of your life choices. If you’re ever in Bath, I’d highly recommend it.
There’s a particular kind of calm that comes with doing a solo day trip as a reader, just having a wander about and stopping wherever looks interesting.
And, practically speaking, it’s exactly the kind of day where bookish accessories earn their keep. My Kindle was safe and sound inside the handmade padded sleeve in my bag, doing heavy lifting without making a scene. You definitely need one. That is my unbiased, independent opinion as the person who makes them and is trying to sell you one.
If you’re here for handmade Kindle sleeves UK, bookish gifts for readers, handbound classic novels, or printable typesets for bookbinding, that is, in fact, what I make.
But also, gently: you don’t have to wait. Not for the right time, not for other people, not for a perfectly coordinated plan. Sometimes you can just take your book, your bag, your slightly overambitious train route, and go. It’s an excellent use of free will, I promise.
